Dr Arvind Gupta

Dr Arvind Gupta specialises in:

  • Cataract surgery, including multifocal intraocular lens and toric intraocular lens.
  • Medical retina including, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and macular edema, retinal vein occulsion, and other retinal conditions.
  • Neuro-ophthalmology including, ocular motor nerve palsy, optic disc edema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
  • General ophthalmology

Dr Gupta completed medical school at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Subsequently, he followed his passion to choose ophthalmology as a career to be able to help patients see better and achieve the best eyesight possible. He completed initial ophthalmology training in Pondicherry, following which he underwent Advanced Specialist Training in Ophthalmology at Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore. Dr Gupta also underwent sub-specialty training in Neuro-ophthalmology and Medical Retina at Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore.

The beauty and charm of Aotearoa attracted him to migrate to New Zealand in 2018. He works as a consultant at Greenlane Clinical Centre (Auckland DHB) and Counties Manukau Health (CMDHB). He also provides private consultations at Eye Doctors, Ascot Central, Botany Junction. and Karaka. He operates at Columba @ Ascot and Ormiston Hospitals.

Dr Gupta believes in sharing his knowledge and skills. He is actively involved in training the next generation of ophthalmologists in New Zealand. He has published extensively and has 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored textbooks in ophthalmology and volunteers as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed international journals. He has received multiple awards in patient care and for his research. He has actively participated in organising ophthalmic conferences, including NZ-RANZCO 2024 ophthalmology conference in Auckland.

As an overseas-trained ophthalmologist, Dr. Gupta understands the uncertainties and anxieties faced by overseas-trained doctors. He devotes his time to assessing the training, qualifications and experience of the overseas trained ophthalmologists aspiring to work in Australia or New Zealand and provides support and advice to ensure a smoother transition to this side of the world. He is an active member of the RANZCO-Specialist-International Medical Graduates (S-IMG) committee of Australia and New Zealand.
