Dr Penny McAllum recently undertook her fourth volunteer visit to Niue Island. A team of diabetic eye screeners also attended for the first time. They saw over 160 patients, with diabetics making up the majority of cases. She performed cataract surgery on several patients and also found quite a few young people suffering from keratoconus and requiring corneal collagen crosslinking to prevent further loss of vision. Pterygium growths on the surface of the eye were also prevalent, due to the high sun exposure in Niue. The visit was very worthwhile and Penny plans to return to Niue for a similar trip next year.
