Dr Joel Yap

Dr Joel Yap specialises in: 

  • The surgical management of retinal diseases (including retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreous opacities and surgical complications)
  • The management and treatment of retinal diseases (including macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusions and diabetic retinopathy)
  • Cataract Surgery - including astigmatism correcting lenses (Toric IOLs) and multifocal lenses.
Joel grew up in Malaysia and his family migrated to New Zealand when he was 12. After graduation from Otago University Medical School in 2007, Joel complete his ophthalmic training in Auckland and the northern part of New Zealand. He then furthered his vitreo-retinal subspecialist training at the University of Toronto in Canada. He has a passion for clinical research and strives to achieve the best outcome for patients with retinal problems. Joel can speak Mandarin and has a particular interest in secondary intraocular lens implantation.
