Dr McAllum Volunteers in Niue

Tue April 9th 2019

Dr McAllum recently returned from her 7th Eye Team volunteer visit to Niue Island.  This trip was two years in the planning and marked a big change to the way eye surgery is delivered there.  For the first time they were able to do modern small incision "phaco" cataract surgery, much the same as it is done in New Zealand.  This was achieved thanks to the generous donations of a quality operating microscope by Zeiss and phaco ultrasound machine by Alcon.  They operated on 34 eyes of 33 patients, mostly with very advanced cataracts, and achieved great results.  The team included two surgeons, an eye operating theatre nurse, an optometrist and a diabetic photoscreener, who saw more than 300 patients between them.  The are now planning their next visit for 2020.
